Please note that separate standing orders are needed for anaphylaxis treatment—epinephrine or diphenhydramine. In recent discussions with NYSDOH Epi, they have stated that there aren’t any unique circumstances regarding administration of epinephrine or diphenhydramine following COVID-19 vaccines as opposed to any other circumstance in which they would be needed. Therefore, you should be able to easily modify your existing standing orders for anaphylaxis treatment—ones that you are already required to have in place for the administration of any vaccine under a standing order. Lastly, please also note that while scope of practice has been expanded to allow additional individuals to administer COVID and flu vaccines, administration of anaphylaxis treatment under a standing order would still need to occur in accordance with Education Law and association regulations (again, no different than what you are already familiar with in situations where anaphylaxis treatment would need to be administered after the administration of a routine vaccine under a standing order).
